Who are they?
Sporting Life Group, a Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited company, is a premier Canadian sports lifestyle retail organization with two iconic banners, Golf Town and Sporting Life. Their stores can be found from coast to coast and offer a wide range of products and experiences that inspire Canadians to lead active, outdoor lifestyles. Whether it’s playing golf on some of Canada’s top courses, hitting the community trails for a run, or enjoying the beautiful scenery, Sporting Life Group and Golf Town are dedicated to helping customers enjoy the great outdoors in their own unique ways.
The challenge
Sporting Life and Golf Town were looking to expand their Marketing department over the course of a year, but they faced some challenges. They were implementing a new ERP system and consolidating some of their ecommerce efforts, and they needed to fill roles in both Calgary and Toronto. Their previous recruitment agency lacked consistent communication and feedback and was a generalist agency, which made it difficult to find the right talent for their unique needs.
To overcome these challenges, the Chief Commercial Officer brought on hirequity as a strategic HR Business Partner in recruitment. With weekly updates to the Senior Leadership Team, hirequity provided a customized and engaging recruitment process that helped Sporting Life and Golf Town find the talent they needed to achieve their goals.
Our process
For Sporting Life Group and Golf Town, we utilized our comprehensive recruitment process to help them grow their marketing department over the course of one year. As part of this process, we used online interviews, reviewed LinkedIn profiles and resumes, and requested relevant portfolios or online assessments to evaluate each candidate.
We took an interactive approach to negotiating agreements with the candidates and conducted thorough references and backchecks to ensure their background and qualifications were fully vetted. After a successful hire, we followed up with each candidate on their first day, first month, second month, and third month to ensure they were settling in well and meeting expectations.
Strategy and solutions
We fully customized a Recruitment process to create an engaging, brand-specific hiring journey for their team. We met with key stakeholders in Marketing and HR to understand the needs that would arise over the next year and the immediate needs.
The result was an interactive, interviewing process that educated the Sporting Life and Golf Town stakeholders on market trends (including compensation and diversity of talent). We placed over 25 team members in key roles that will help to keep these brands at the forefront of sporting retail.
